Design of Self-developed Software Defined Radio Experimental Platform Based on FPGA

    • The verification of traditional wireless communication or radar technologies mainly relies on software simulation or expensive foreign Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRP). In response to this situation, this article focuses on the key technologies of the Software Defined Radio (SDR) experimental platform and independently develops a SDR hardware verification experimental platform based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and independently designs and develops multi-layer RF and baseband Printed Circuit Board (PCB) hardware, FPGA embedded software. This experimental platform supports multiple representative experimental cases that are widely supported by commercial SDR platforms such as USRP, and uses ZYNQ-7020 FPGA and AD9361 as baseband and Radio Frequency (RF) processing chips, supporting two communication interfaces: gigabit Ethernet port and Universal Serial Bus (USB). The experimental results show that the self-developed SDR hardware experimental platform has achieved the expected design goals and has advantages such as "smaller size, lower cost, lower power consumption, and more flexible and diverse interfaces" compared to similar SDR experimental platforms. It is more suitable for experimental scenarios with strict requirements on power consumption and size, such as low altitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). To a certain extent, it alleviates the technical bottleneck problem of China on the SDR experimental platform.
